The Camphouse Egmont National Park
A piece of New Zealand History
The historic Camphouse at North Egmont is an ideal Day location for people seeking quiet surroundings and stunning views of the North Taranaki coast and Central North Island.
It is the oldest surviving in any New Zealand national park Hut and is registered Category 1 with the Historic Places Trust.
After the Taranaki Land Wars in the 1860s, when it was used as military barracks in New Plymouth, the building was sledged to North Egmont in 1891 for use as accommodation. The camphouse was restored and upgraded in 1999. most of the historic features such as handwrought corrugated iron with gun shots and tongue and groove timber panelling are visible.
- Shuttle Bus or Vehicle Traffic Access Egmont Rd from Egmont Village on State Highway 3, turn up Egmont Road and follow for 16km to the roadend. New Plymouth to North Egmont is a pleasant 40 minute drive along sealed roads.
Things to Do
Egmont National Park is an area of unique rainforests and alpine scenery. It provides opportunities for walks, tramps, picnics, photography, skiing, mountaineering, rockclimbing and generally enjoying the variety of scenery and habitats.
The North Egmont Visitor Centre has informative displays and a 20 minute audio-visual. Interpretive talks and walks with DOC staff can be arranged for school and special interest groups.
North Egmont is the major starting point for most walks, tramps and activities.
Mt Taranaki Summit Climbs
- Organised free summmit climbs are on offer but you will have to do your home work and find when they are on
- There are are also paid for guided walks with qualified mountain guides.
- Feel free to call the New Plymouth Info center or contact DOC, this can be done in New Plymouth City or at the North Taranaki Visitor Center.

Weather
Egmont National Park is subject to sudden dramatic weather changes. Anyone going for more than a short walk should carry protective clothing, whatever the season. This includes woollen hat, boots, wind and waterproof parka and overtrousers.
